Landscape Management Intern

Field & Fork Farm and Gardens 

The Landscape Management Intern, under the supervision of the Field and Fork Farm Manager, is responsible for planning and executing landscape maintenance, restoration, and maintenance. The Intern will lead volunteers and fellow farm interns to assist with maintenance and planting activities and will communicate with the Field and Fork Director regarding needs and ideas for garden support or enhancement. In addition, the Landscape Manager will have the opportunity to contribute to the design, creation and installation of interpretive signage and other materials that will communicate and educate the public about Field and Fork.  

Duties Include:  

• Work to ensure Native and Pollinator Gardens, Office Landscape, sidewalks, bat house fence lines, and other non-agricultural field areas are well maintained, including weeding, mulching, pruning, planting and handling Integrated Pest Management. 
• Inspect landscape areas to ensure overall presentation and condition of grounds and gardens meets goals for program and public spaces at UF and report needs to Farm Manager. 

• Support the development of educational opportunities, working with the Program Manager and the Outreach Intern to create Interpretive signs, demonstrations, and/or other materials to communicate and educate the public about Field and Fork.  
• Coordinate with the UF and IFAS Facilities & Maintenance staff for items that are outside our capabilities or responsibilities, such as tree trimming, repairs, and mowing 
• Prioritize horticultural tasks and coordinate implementation of work assignments with the Field and Fork team. 
• Be able and willing to interact with volunteers, faculty and student visitors, garden and school groups, as well as lead garden walks.  
• Collaborate with Faculty and Extension Professionals to support demonstration landscapes and coordinate planned activities for these spaces 

Preferred Skills and Experience  

• pursuing degree in Plant Sciences, Environmental Horticulture, or related field. 
• experience overseeing volunteers 
• knowledge of horticulture and grounds maintenance procedures 
• understanding of proper pruning techniques, planting, perennial and annual care as well as native plants and ecosystems 

• understanding of irrigation systems’ operation and repair 
• ability to lift 55 pounds on a regular basis; work outside for long periods of time in unfavorable conditions; perform strenuous manual labor requiring considerable walking, lifting, reaching, climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling and carrying 
• willing to become or holds a certified pesticide applicator license 
• ability to operate small power and hand tools, and larger equipment including mowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers 
• familiarity and comfortable using Microsoft Office suite, email and other communication tools and applications.  

• demonstrate natural leadership, ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers, visitors, and others in the workplace. 

Job Details  

• 10 hours/ week @ $15/ hour, must have some morning hours available 
• Federal work study available and encouraged
